الأسئلة هي وسائل التعليم الأكثر أهمية بالنسبة إلى الصغار، وميلي بطلة رواية "تائهون في أستراليا" لا تختلف كثيراً عن سائر الصغار. ذات يوم، وجدت الكلب رامبو ميتاً، فدوّنت اسمه في أعلى لائحة للكائنات الميتة. وما لبثت هذه اللائحة أن ضمت ثمانية وعشرين كائناً، من بينها والدها. "سرعان ما لاحظت ميلي أن كل شيء من حولها يموت. الحشرات والبرتقال وأشجار الزينة والبيوت وصناديق الرسائل والقطارات والشموع والمسنّون والشباب ومتوسطو الأعمار..."، وهكذا، تتوالى المخلوقات الميتة أمامها، لتملأ بها "كتاب الأموات"، بانتظار الإجابة عن أسئلة حيرتها، وعندما لم تقنعها الأجوبة، لجأت إلى رفاقها في المدرسة الأكبر سناً منها، ثم الكتب المدرسية بحثاً عن السّر الكبير وراء تلك "الكائنات الميتة"؟!
ذات يوم وبينما كانت ميلي برفقة أمها في السوق طلبت منها الانتظار ريثما تعود، وهناك تبدأ أيام الانتظار، ومغامرات ميلي؛ حيث تلتقي كارل الطابع على الآلة الكاتبة وآغاثا، ومن هنا تبدأ التعرف على عالم الكبار بانتظار حياة أخرى لا تعرف عنها شيئاً!!
تائهون في أستراليا: رواية ستضحك، وتبكيك، وتجعلك أكثر حكمة.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "... بعد عشر سنوات من الآن، ستجلس آغاثا بجوار سرير كارل في المستشفى وتشاهد أيامه الأخيرة في الحياة تنقضي أمام عينيها. وستكون ميلي في بلدٍ آخر، لذا سيفوتها كل هذا، ولكنها ستعود لتحضر جنازته. وفي تأبينها لها، ستقول: كارل هو صديقي الحميم، وستتعمد استخدام صيغة المضارع في كلامها. أما آغاثا، فستفارق الحياة بعد كارل بثلاثة أشهر. وستعثر عليها ميلي ميتةً على كنبتها. وستعتقد ميلي أنها تبدو حزينة وسعيدة في آن. وفي نهاية المطاف، ستموت ميلي أيضاً كما تموت كل الكائنات مخلفةً وراءها زوجاً سابقاً وولدين بالغين. سيأتي موتها جراء حادث مفاجئ وسريع. ولن تكوّن جملتها الأخيرة فكرةً حقيقيةً على الإطلاق... ولكنهم في هذه اللحظة لا يعرفون كل هذا بعد. لأن هؤلاء الثلاثة في الوقت الحاضر؛ ميلي وآغاثا وكارل، منطلقون في طريقهم للعودة أدراجهم من حيث أتوا".
