تتحدث الرواية عن فتاة نشأت في ظل أسرة محافظة تعيش مع عائلتها في قرية متواضعة في شمال السعودية، ولأن العادات تحكم بأن العزباء لا تغادر منزل ذويها إلَّا إلى منزل زوجها، تجد في الزواج من سعد الذي تقدم أهله لخطبتها له من دون أن يعرفوا بعضهم البعض، مساحة للحرية خارج أسوار البيت، ولإكمال دراستها خارج حدود الوطن مع زوجها. يغادر الزوجان إلى أمريكا لتجد م.ع أن حياة أخرى تنتظرها أشد وأقسى مما عاشته في قريتها، تحرم من إكمال دراستها الجامعة وتقبع في المنزل لتربية الأطفال. يخونها من كان أقرب المقربين لها، ويسرق حقها من كان مسؤولاً عنها. تقاوم من أجل الحفاظ على عائلتها وخوفها من الطلاق الذي يعتبر كابوساً لبنات القرية، لكن من دون جدوى.. تقرر أن تكسر الحاجز وتهدم الأسوار بعد أن خسرت الكثير الكثير ولم يتبقَ إلا القليل لتحافظ عليه...
