«نحن نقف إلى جانب بعضنا» رواية غريبة ومشوّقة تدور حول علاقة قوية تجمع بين أفراد أسرة صغيرة وحيوان ربّته منذ أن كان صغيراً؛ حتى صار بمثابة أحد أفرادها.
ولكن، حين تشاء الظروف وتضطر العائلة إلى إبعاد الحيوان عنها وإرساله إلى أحد المختبرات بهدف إخضاعه للدراسات تتغير حياة العائلة بأسرها، فتفتر العلاقات بين أفرادها، ويذهب كل منهم في طريق؛ والشعور بالحزن يتآكلهم جميعاً ويترك بصماته واضحة في حياة كل منهم.
ومع مرور الزمن، تُكشف بعض الأسرار، وتتوضح بعض الأمور التي كانت مخفية، فتعود الأمور إلى نصابها نوعاً ما. ولكن، يبقى هناك سؤال يطرح نفسه بشكل مستمر: هل فات الأوان على لمّ شمل العائلة مجدداً؟ هذا ما ستكتشفه لدى مطالعتك هذه الرواية المشوقة.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:
"... لا وجود في كتابنا لقطط مقتولة. كل شيء في الكتاب صحيح وحقيقي؛ (...) لن يكون محتوى الكتاب مناسباً وكافياً لوصف لويل أبداً. ولهذا، وضعت هذه الرواية له، ومن أجل فيرن أيضاً؛ فيرن مجدداً، وعلى الدوام. لقد عاش كل من أخي وأختي حياةً خارجة عن المألوف، ولكنني لم أكن جزءاً منها، ولا يمكنني أن أقص عليكم ما لم أشهده، ولهذا فأنا أحكي لكم ما أعرفه؛ القسم الذي يخصني من قصتهما، وما زال كل ما أحكيه عنهما أيضاً وأيضاً كدائرة أرسمها بالطباشير حولنا نحن الثلاثة الذين جمعتنا مرة في الماضي قصة واحدة.
السبب الوحيد الذي ساقني لكي أكون الفرد الذي يقص الحكاية هو أنني لست موجودة وراء القضبان، في قفص، مثلهما.
حاولت معظم حياتي ألا أتكلم عن فيرن ولويل وطفولتي معهما، ولهذا سأحتاج إلى وقت لأعتاد فعل ذلك، وسأفكر في أن ما قمت به هنا على الورق تدريب على البوح.
لأن كل ما تحتاج إليه هذه العائلة الآن متكلم عظيم...".
