نقطة تحول غيّرت حياة شيريل بشكل جذري؛ وفاة أمها بعد فترة قصيرة من إصابتها بمرض عضال. لقد عاشت شيريل طفولة قاسية، إلا أنها لم تؤهلها لمواجهة صدمة فراق غير متوقعة، فقد كانت أمها كل شيء في حياتها.بعد وفاة والدتها، عكست شيريل كل القيم التي تتمسك بها؛ فكان الفراق مع زوجها ورفيق دربها، وانقلبت المرأة الصالحة العطوف إلى النقيض، فقد طوت صفحة العائلة هاجرة أخاها وأختها وزوج أمها الذي اعتنى بهم منذ الصغر كما لو أنهم أولاده، فتفككت العائلة، وذهب كل منهم في دربه. وكانت النتيجة حياة من الضياع، إلى أن رأت ذات يوم في أحد المتاجر كتاباً على أحد الرفوف يحمل عنوان "طريق جبال المحيط الهادي" ؛ فقررت سلوك ذلك الدرب بمفردها.وخلال رحلتها، تعرفت شيريل على الكثير من الأشخاص الذين كانوا يخوضون التجربة نفسها، وتمكنت من تخطي الصعوبات وبلوغ مقصدها بعزم وإرادة لا تلين. ومع تقدمها على ذلك الدرب، تعرفت على نفسها أكثر، وتخلصت من مخاوفها وآلامها.هذا الكتاب رحلة على دروب الجبال تتوازى مع رحلة مصالحة مع النفس المتألمة.من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:"... كنت وحيدة وحافية القدمين في السادسة والعشرين من العمر ويتيمة أيضاً... مشردة... كان أبي قد غادر حياتي حين كنت في السادسة من العمر، وتوفيت أمي حين كنت في الثانية والعشرين، وبعد وفاتها تحول زوج أمي من الشخص الذي كنت اعتبره أبي إلى رجل بالكاد أعرفه، في حين تاه أخواي في حزنهما – على الرغم من جهودي لكي نبقى مع بعضنا – حتى استسلمت ورحلت أيضاً.خلال السنوات الماضية، رميت حذائي من جرف جبلي، وكدت أرمي بنفسي أيضاً. فقد طفتُ وجلتُ ومشيتُ من مينيسوتا إلى نيويورك إلى أوريغون وعبر الغرب حتى وجدت نفسي في النهاية حافية القدمين في صيف عام 1995 ولا تربطني بالعالم روابط قوية.لقد كان عالماً لم أدخله قط، لكنني كنت هناك طوال الوقت؛ حيث ترنحت بأسف وارتباك وخوف وأمل... إنه عالم ظننت أنه سيجعلني المرأة التي كنت أعلم عرضه قدمان وطوله 2663 ميلاً.عالم يدعى طريق جبال المحيط الهادي...".
