تظهر للقارئ بوضوح ملامح «عالم مختلف» اختارته رؤى عبيد؛ لتجعل منه رواية عن المرأة/ الكاتبة في مختلف حالاتها، فاستدعت لنا شخصية امرأة من الطبقة المثقفة هي "سارة" كاتبة في جريدة محلية ناجحة وطموحة ولكنها أرادت البحث عن ذاتها كامرأة قبل كل شيء، فخرجت إلى الحياة لتعيشها كتجربة بعد أن عاشتها على الورق.تبدأ الرواية بتقديم الشخصية نفسها بنفسها وللعالم الذي تعيش فيه والذي يحمل دلالته بداخله بوضوح تام "في ذلك اليوم قررت الهروب إلى عالم جديد، عالم مختلف يليق بتفكيري، وأجد فيه نفسي التواقة للتغيير، عالم يتقبلني بعيوبي، وبطموحي. يتقبّلني كما أنا وكما أحب أن أكون، عالم كله حب وأمل..."، وهكذا قررت "سارة" مغادرة بيت عمها الذي احتضنها صغيرة بعدما توفي والداها في حادث سيارة.. شكرتهما على استضافتها كل هذه السنين وقصدت محطة الحافلات متجهة إلى شقتها القديمة التي ورثتها عن أباها وشعور يلازمها أنها تبدأ رحلة إلى المجهول؛ تشدها الذكريات نحو ماضٍ عاشته، وتستقبل عالم آخر أحبته إنه عالم الكتابة وعالم الأصدقاء وعالم الموسيقى وعبق أزهار التوليب البيضاء ترافقها رائحة قهوتها السوداء أينما حلت... تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى يدخل حياتها إدوارد الكاتب المشهور، والذي سيكون لها معه قصة حبٌ وعشق أبدي ما يلبث أن يتحول إلى حزنٍ وفَقْدٍ أبدي. لقد تحولت مشاهد فرحٍ وتوليب أبيض إلى جنازة وورد بالٍ أحمر...!!سيغمرك الحزن كثيراً بعد الانتهاء من قراءة هذه الرواية...
