يضم عالم حروب القطط أربعاً من العشائر التي تعيش في الغابة: عشيرة الرعد، عشيرة الظلال، عشيرة النهر، وعشيرة الرياح. أما عن "تراتبية العشيرة" سيجد القارئ للرواية أن عشائر القطط تملك نظاماً هرمياً، بحيث تحتل القطط مناصب مختلفة ضمن العشيرة الواحدة. يُمنح زعيم العشيرة تسع أرواح واسم زعيم يبدأ بكلمة "نجم". وهو الذي يتخذ كلّ القرارات الهامة، كشنّ المعارك أو ترقية المحاربين. وكلمته هي القانون، بحسب قانون المحاربين. يأتي من بعده النائب، الذي يخلف الزعيم عندما يخسر هذا الأخير روحه الأخيرة. تقوم وظيفته الأساسية على تنظيم الدوريات وغيرها من المهام اليومية. ولكي يعيَّن الهرّ نائباً، يجب أن يكون محارباً قام بتدريب مبتدئ واحد على الأقلّ. تضم العشيرة أيضاً هرّاَ مداوياً تأتيه رسائل من عشيرة النجوم (أرواح القطط الميتة) ويتمّ تدريبه جيّداً على استخدام الأعشاب لمعالجة القطط المريضة أو الجريحة. غير أنّه لا يُسمح للقطط المداوية بالتزاوج أو الإنجاب لأنّ هذا الأمر يلهيها عن واجباتها... الكثير من كواليس عالم حروب القطط في البراري سنعرفه عندما نقرر قراءة هذه الرواية.
القصة مستلهمة من حبّ القطط ووحشية عالم البراري. بالإضافة إلى الاحترام الكبير الذي تكنّه "إيرين هانتر" للطبيعة بكلّ أشكالها، فهي تستمتع في ابتكار تفسيرات أسطورية غنية لسلوك الحيوانات. وهي أيضاً مؤلّفة السلسلتين الأكثر مبيعاً SeekersوSurvivors.
