بينما يستعد الملاكم رامي لمواجهة الملاكم البريطاني الشهير بول هينزمان، يستعيد ذكرياته منذ ولادته عام 1950 وحتى لحظة دخوله الحلبة، إذ يبدأ من زيزيا القرية التي ولد ونشأ فيها.
يروي رامي حكايته بنفسه، ويتحدث بالتفصيل عن زيزيا حيث الظروف المزرية والفقر المدقع، إذ يسميها "أرض المعاناة"، ويتحدث عن حلمه في أن يصبح طبيباً، وكيف يتحول به الأمر في النهاية إلى أن يغدو ملاكما يسعى لأن يكون عالميا.
رامي رجل طموح، وموهوب، ويسعى جاهداً لترويض الظروف، في سبيل تحقيق طموحاته وأمانيه، ابتداء من تحقيق المجد، مروراً بالنجاح في حبه لابنة قريته هبة التي يعشقها بجنون منذ صغره. وأيضا نجاحه مع عائلته ومع أصدقائه، وهو لا يرفض أي تحد مهما بلغت صعوبته وحتى لو اعتقد الجميع باستحالة الفوز فيه؛ لأن هدفه الأكبر هو أن يثبت إنه الأفضل، ولا يستسلم أبداً حتى لو وجد كل الناس وجميع الظروف تقف ضده.
ومن خلال حكاية رامي، تتناول هذه الرواية الدرامية قضايا يمرّ بها أي إنسان، وتشغل أي امرئ، كالنجاح والطموح والظروف والقدر. وعن طريق المعالجة الدرامية يتم التعرض لأدق المشاعر الإنسانية وأصعبها، إذ يتضح من خلال سرد رامي لحكايته – بوصفه إنسانا لا كائنا مثاليا كاملا مجردا من الأحاسيس – لحظات القوة والضعف. ولحظات الحزن والسعادة، ولحظات الحب والحقد، اللذين قد يصلا حد الجنون.
