تغادر الشقيقتان بيان وهدى مصر مع والديهما في طريقهما إلى الحج، تركب العائلة باخرة قديمة لعبور البحر الأحمر إلى السعودية، تهب عاصفة قوية في البحر لترمي بهدى التي كانت على سطح الباخرة إلى أمواج البحر، تهرع بيان مع رجل قروي لإنقاذها بقارب نجاة.تقود الأقدار الزورق إلى جزيرة وسط البحر يسكنها مهربون، تبقى الفتاتان في القرية تحت رحمة المهربين ورحمة امرأة عجوز قاسية، ثم تستطيعان الهروب.تمر الفتاتان بصعوبات ومآزق تحتاج التصرف بذكاء منها اتهامهما من قبل الشرطة بالتهريب، ومعاملتهما كأسيرتين في منزل رجل ذو نفوذ وسوابق؛ فهل تنجح الفتاتان في لقاء ذويهما ثانيةً؟من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:"قررت البنتان أنهُ لا مناص من الهرب، فالبقاء ليس في صالحهما، وقد تنكشف حيلتهما حينذاك تكون العاقبة وخيمة. اقتنعت بيان أنهُ لا بد من الاتصال بالزعيم فهو ملاذهما الأخير. لقد عرفت أين تخبئ العجوز مفتاح الباب، فلن يكون الخروج من الدار صعباً، ولكن السؤال المحير هو كيف ستصلان للزعيم في هذه القرية ذات الطرق الوعرة والأكواخ المتباعدة. ولكن مع ذلك قررتا المجازفة.بعد صلاة الفجر فتحت البنتان باب غرفتهما بهدوءٍ وحذر شديدين، ونظرت بيان إلى الحوش الذي كان خالياً تماماً، وحتى الحيوانات كانت هادئة ونائمة وكانت غرفة العجوز مسدودة ولا أثر فيها لأي حركة. وضعت هدى الحقيبة حول كتفها، وتحسست جوازات السفر، وعندما وصلتا إلى الباب الخارجي سحبت بيان المفتاح من الجدار، وقامت بفتح الباب بكل حذر. انفتح الباب، ووجدت البنتان أنهما في الشارع وحدهما للمرة الأولى منذ تركتهما الباخرة...".
