في روايته «خُبز العَونيّة.. قصة الحبوب المعفَّرة بالزئبق» سعى الكاتب يونس علي الحمداني إلى اعتماد عنوان متواصل سردياً مع المكونات الحكائية؛ ونصٍّ تميز ببنية روائية كشفت عن مهارة عالية المستوى في استخدام آليات صياغية، احتوت مضموناً حكائياً حاملاً صورة من صور المعاناة المتصلة بالمحن البشرية الاستثنائية أي بما هو مشترك مع الآخرين وقف خلاله الكاتب عند مأساة إنسانية مرّ بها وطنه في تاريخه الحديث. لقد شكل الكاتب الحمداني عالمه الروائي انطلاقاً من وقائع حقيقية صادمة عاشها أبناء العراق تعيد إلى ذهن القارئ قصة الحبوب المعفَّرة بالزئبق زمن النظام العراقي الأسبق وقدم لها بإضاءة يقول فيها: "قصة قرية نرمز لها لكل القرى التي أكلت من الحنطة المعفَّرة بالزئبق.. الحنطة التي وزعتها الحكومة العراقية في خريف سنة 1971 ميلادية كمعينة للفلاحين تعويضاً عن الجدب الذي أصابهم بسبب انحباس المطر في الموسم الذي سبقه. المعينة أو (العونية) وفقاً للتسمية الشعبية، تسببت بقتل كثير من الناس وعوّقت وأتلفت أدمغة أناس آخرين حيث أصيبوا بعد ذلك بالجنون، وثمة مَن تم تشويه مظهرهم برجفة ظلت تهز أطرافهم إلى يوم مماتهم ما عدا من فقدوا أبصارهم إلى الأبد. هو وباء مفتعل مزق نفسيات الفلاحين بجدارة. الرواية ليست نقداً مقصوداً لحكومة معينة بقدر ما هي قضية إنسانية يجب أن تطرح وتذاع، وقصة لا بدّ أن تُحكى. الرواية تحمل روح الواقع الملون بحياة وتخيلات الإنسان وحبه للخير والزرع، وليس هناك ما يحجب الشعرة الرفيعة بين الواقع المعاش والرواية إلا الفن الرفيع، لأنه يصعب إعطاء الحرية الكاملة للأبطال لممارسة كل ترهاتهم لكن ذلك لا يعني إرغامهم على قول كل ما يريده المؤلف.. هي عملية سيلان هادئ يتقاسم فيه الراوي مع شخصياته اتفاقات سرية وعلنية تمثل حداً وسطاً يرضي الطرفين وينسجم مع جمال الرواية وهدفها.
في الرواية ثمة أسماء شخوص بقيت على حالها لضرورة إنعاش واقعية الرواية مثل (عبيد القادر، الجدة سودة، خلف الجربوع، صالح الحجي، بلال، ثلاج)، أما الأسماء الأخرى فمختلقة أو مجازية غيرناها حفاظاً على أناس لا يودون ذكر أسمائهم الصريحة مثل أسماء الأبطال الرئيسيين عبد الله ومزنة وعواد".
