يطرح هذا الكتاب أعمال المؤتمر الدولي الثالث للمحللين النفسيين العرب الذي تعد في بيروت بين 17-19 أيار 2007، والذي عالج قضايا العصر الحديث الذي يتميز خلافاً للماضي بظاهرة العنف بأبعادها الإيديولوجية والقومية، وصراع ما بين الدول حسب مسار تاريخها ومصالحها، وما بين موقع الإنسان بحكم ذاتيته –فرغم تواطئه إلا أنه يرفض أن يختزل بعدد من بين هذه الضخايا- العنف هو نتيجة هذه الصراعات وليس سببها، ونرى أن مساحاته المفضلة هي الشرق الأوسط كونه معد كل الأديان السماوية.
لا نستطيع أن نفصل العنف عن العولمة التي أًبحت إيديولوجية بحد ذاتها تتصارع مع الإيديولوجيات الدينية والقومية –رغم التقدم التكنولوجي الذي لم يسبق له مثيل، نتساءل إذا كان الإنسان بالمقابل قد اصبح أكثر سعادة: الجواب يأتي من الميدان العيادي حيث يبدو أن الإنسان يعاني من اكتئاب عالمي يرافق العولمة.
موضوع المؤتمر هذا إذاً هو الدين وعلاقته مع العلم والتحليل النفسي، وكما يقول لا كان لم يكن ليوجد التحليل من دون ظهور الخطاب العلمي. إن موضوع التحليل النفسي هو موضوع العلم نفسه، لأن إنسان العلم هو إنسان مريض حكماً عبر تهميش ذاتيته.
في نظر الحداثة، يبدأ الخطاب العلمي بالمفهوم البنيوي انطلاقاً من ديكارت، ولا يعني ذلك أنه لم يمهد له في ما قبل هذا التاريخ. فالإغريق قد أبدعوا في علوم الرياضيات، والعرب قد أعطوا الكثير من الاكتشافات العلمية في الطب والفلك والكيمياء وغيرها –ولكن كل هذه العلوم لم تكون خطاباً بنيوياً مستقلاً فبقيت مرهونة ومقيدة بالمعتقدات الدينية واللاهوتية. حتى غاليليو وكوبرنيك وإسحاق نيوتن مروراً بديكارت، بقيت اكتشافاتهم العلمية في إطار الدين أو دعم المعتقد الديني، وقد لخص باسكال ذلك في كلمة قال فيها: "بقدر ما تكتسب من المعرفة العلمية بقدر ما تقترب من الخالق".
