تمثل هذه الفترة مرحلة هامة من تاريخ لبنان الحديث، لم تحظ ما تستحقه من اهتمام المؤرخين المعاصرين. فبالرغم من خضوع لبنان وبلاد الشام الجنوبية لمدة تزيد على الأربعة قرون للحكم العثماني، يلاحظ الباحث ندرة البحوث والدراسات الأكاديمية العلمية للقرون الثلاثة الأولى، في حين تبدأ البحوث والدراسات ابتداءً من الثلث الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر. ويعلل المؤرخون هذه الظاهرة بازدهار العصر السابق للفتح العثماني لبلاد الشام، الذي اصطلح على تسميته بالعصر الإسلامي، وانشغال الناس بأحداث العصر التالي لتخلص بلاد الشام من السيطرة العثمانية وخضوعها للانتداب الفرنسي، وما أعقب ذلك من كفاح قومي للتخلص من هذا الاحتلال. ويمكن أن نُشير إلى عامل ثالث يتمثل في صعوبة جمع المادة التاريخية التي يجب أن تكون في متناول الباحث، وهذا ما واجهنا بالفعل أثناء إعداد هذه الدراسة.
من يريد الوصول إلى المصادر الأصلية، في إعداد دراسات أكاديمية علمية في تاريخ لبنان الحديث وعلاقته بالقوى المحلية المجاورة في بلاد الشام الجنوبية، يعاني المصاعب التي تواجه الباحث عن القدر المستطاع من الحقيقة التاريخية. فأغلب وثائقنا المحلية، من فرمانات السلاطين وباشاوات الولايات العثمانية، وأوامر رجال الحكم، والمُراسلات المتبادلة بين هيئات الحكم في ولايات بلاد الشام العثمانية وأمراء الجبل ومشايخ المقاطعات، والكثير مما كتبه المعاصرون من أبناء بلاد الشام أنفسهم، كتراجم لأعلامهم وتاريخ لبلادهم، قد تعرض للتلف والاختفاء. فماذا تبقى من المكتبات الخاصة التي كانت تملكها بعض العائلات اللبنانية، والتي كانت تزخر بالثمين من الكتب والرسائل والوثائق والمخطوطات التاريخية والأدبية؟ جلها اختفى أو ذهب طعماً للنيران والمياه والتلف نتيجة لعوامل عديدة.
