إن هذا الكتاب مفيد جداً، فهو ليس تكراراً لمؤلفات سابقة حول جغرافية السكان، بل هو إسهام لا يستهان به في إثراء المكتبة الجغرافية العربية عموماً وجغرافية السكان على وجه الخصوص، بل وحتى الدراسات في العلوم الإنسانية بصفة أشمل. وقد توخى المؤلف الدكتور علي لبيب أسلوباً سلساً وبرهن عن تمكنه من اختصاصه في جغرافية السكان.
وقد قُسّم الكتاب إلى خمسة عشر فصلاً استعرض فيها على التوالي: النظريات الديمغرافية، مفهوم ومصادر الجغرافيا السكانية، التوزيع الجغرافي والخصوبة، الوفيات، الانتقال الديمغرافي، التركيب السكني حسب العمر والجنس، سكان الريف وسكان المدينة، السكان والنشاط الاقتصادي، الهجرة، السكان وتدهور البيئة، التنمية البشرية، وأخيراً السياسات السكانية.
وقد أثرى الكتاب بعديد الأمثلة الحينية المعبّرة عن مختلف أقطار العالم الأكثر تقدماً والأقل تقدماً واعتمد كثيراً على وسائل الإيضاح 11 خريطة و7 رسوم بيانية و18 جدولاً إحصائياً.
وفضلاً عن ذلك، فقد حلّل بعمق عدة مفاهيم ونظريات خاصة بجغرافية السكان. ووُفق-سيما في الفصل قبل الأخير-في ربط السكان بالتنمية البشرية.
