"كثيرا ما يظن المرء أن عقله سوف يغدو خاملاً إن هو لم يستطع النظر إلى العالم والناس من زاوية جديدة" هذه العبارة يسوقها "إيفان كليما" في ولوجه إلى عالم القمامة على قاعدة هي " أن الإحترام لا يناله إلا من ينظفون العالم من القمامة البشرية: الشرطة والقضاة والمحققون ...".
بطل الرواية أستاذ جامعي يعمل في إحدى الجامعات الأميركية، يقرر العودة إلى بلاده (براغ) على الرغم من أنه بلد فقير لا ينعم بالحرية، "حيث من المحتمل أن أسجن أو أن يبعث بي إلى سبيريا" هكذا عبّر عن مشاعره لزملائه في الحفل الذي أقيم على شرفه في الجامعة قبيل عودته من أمريكا محاولا أن يكون منشرح الصدر مثل الأميركيين قائلاً: " ... وتظاهرات أمامهم بشيء من الوطنية، أو بنوع من الإحساس بالواجب، حتى توصلت إلى تفسير مقنع. قلت لهم إن الناس في بلادي يعرفونني فحتى لو اضطررت إلى جمع القمامة من الشوارع فسوف أكون في نظرهم كما أنا، كما أريد أن أكون، لا أي شيىء، سأكون كاتبا، أما هنا فسوف أظل واحداً من أولئك المهاجرين الذين أشفق عليهم هذا البلد العظيم ..." وعندما عاد إلى بلاده عرف أنه سوف لن يكون أكثر من، مجرد شخص يكنس الشوارع، شخص لا يكاد أن يلاحظه أحد.
يمكن القول أن هذه الرواية تعالج اغتراب الفرد، سواء داخل بلاده، أو خارجها، تغوص في عالم المهمشين بإمعان، وتنفتح على موضوعات ملحة في عالم اليوم، البطالة في البلدان الفقيرة، إنعدام الحريات، سيطرة الماورائيات على عقول الناس، أطفال الشوارع، الفقر، المرض، وحتى الجنة والنار وعالم الأرواح.
