«العثمانية آخر الإمبراطوريات» هو الجزء الثاني من مشروع جمع أحاديث الكاتب التركي إلبر أورطايلي حول العثمانية، وهي أحاديث أدلى بها عبر وسائل الإعلام المختلفة. كما يمكن اعتبار الكتاب رؤية أورطايلي للعثمانية التي عرضها في محاضرات عامة.
يعتبر الكاتب أن الإمبراطورية العثمانية هي آخر إمبراطورية عالمية بالمعنى الحقيقي للتاريخ؛ وإنطلاقاً من هذه الرؤية، تم تناول الإمبراطورية العثمانية في الكتاب باعتبارها آخر الإمبراطوريات التي شكلت الحضارات العالمية وخريطتها السياسية، أي الإمبراطوريات الكلاسيكية. يعرض الكتاب للمواضيع المتعلقة بتاريخ الإمبراطورية العثمانية وأحداثها السياسية ومؤسساتها وشخصياتها وعلاقاتها بالدول الأخرى بأسلوب الحديث، ويُعرج الكتاب على موضوعات وتفاصيل لم ترد في الكتب والمناهج الدراسية. وهكذا يستمر أورطايلي باكتشاف العثمانيين، وهو الذي يحلل الآثار التي تركها لنا التاريخ أثناء إلقائه الضوء على التطورات التاريخية المستمرة من الماضي إلى المستقبل، يدعو أورطايلي قارئه هذه المرة – بأسلوبه الخاص – إلى اكتشاف شكل الإدارة العثمانية، وعلاقاتها الدولية، وتناولها للثقافات والأديان الأخرى، وهذه من خصائصها التي جعلت منها "آخر الإمبراطوريات".
