يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب الباحث موسى العبدلي إن كتابه هذا ليس كتاباً في الأنساب بالدرجة الأولى وإنما هو كتاب (جغرافي - تاريخي) يسجل جغرافية وتاريخ سراة خولان، ولكن كان من الضروري أيضاً التعريف بالإنسان، ولذلك تناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب الحديث عن الأنساب لارتباط علم التاريخ بعلم الأنساب، ولمعرفة تاريخ هذه السراة لا بدّ للقارئ الكريم كما يرى المؤلف أن يلغي من ذهنه الحدود السياسية المعاصرة لشبه الجزيرة العربية ويتصورها وحدة جغرافية مترابطة فلم تعرف شبه الجزيرة العربية لا عرب الجنوب ولا عرب الشمال ولا عرفت لا شمال الجزيرة ولا جنوبها، ولم تورد النقوش ذكراً لا لقحطانية ولا لعدنانية، بل كانت كل شبه الجزيرة مسرحاً لأحداث تاريخية متنوعة، ولهذا السبب فقد حرص المؤلف في هذا الكتاب على تسليط الضوء على هذه السراة بجانبيها الجغرافي (بشقيه: المكاني، والبشري) والتاريخي عبر ثلاثة عصور مختلفة قبل الإسلام وفي صدر الإسلام وفي العصر الحاضر المعاصر، ويعني المؤلف بالجانب التاريخي كما يتضح في الكتاب مجمل حركة الأحداث التاريخية التي حدثت في سراة خولان وصولاً إلى رسم إطار زمني لعصر ما يصطلح عليه بالتاريخ اليمني القديم أو فترة تاريخ الحضارة الراقية في اليمن القديم، وهي تمثل حيناً من الدهر برز فيها سكان بلاد اليمن من غسق التاريخ إلى ضحاه، ومن هؤلاء قبائل خولان بن عامر حيث تناول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة ذكر أبرز بطونهم ومنازلهم وديارهم داخل الجزيرة العربية وخارجها عبر حقب زمنية مختلفة، وحتى يكون البحث أكثر دقة اقتصر المؤلف في هذه الدراسة على جزئية من هذه السراة، وهي: جبال العبادل (بقبائلها الثمان) والتي تقع إلى الشرق من منطقة جازان، وجعلها كنموذج لبقية جبال وقبائل هذه السراة. وتنتهي الدراسة بملامح من المشهد السياسي المعاصر في اليمن بما فيه ظهور الحركة الحوثية في اليمن وموقف المملكة العربية السعودية منها.
