جون سيرل، واحد من أبرز الفلاسفة المحدثين الذين ينتمون لتيار الفلسفة التحليلية. درس الفلسفة في جامعة كاليفورنيا، وحاضر كأستاذ زائر في عدد كير من الجامعات العالمية. يشكل كتاب "العقل واللغة والمجتمع: الفلسفة في العالم الواقعي" خلاصة الحياة الفلسفية لجون سيرل، وقد صدرت الطبعة الأولى منه عام 2000، لكنه حظي بشعبية كبيرة جداً خلال فترة وجيزة، فترجم إلى ما يقارب عشر لغات. وهو يتناول فيه نظرية المعرفة القديمة في ضوء المنجزات العلمية والفلسفية الحديثة، ويدعو إلى تخطي المقاربات والمقولات القديمة المتمثلة في الثنائية والمادية والواحدية، ويعتبرها مسلمات وفرضيات مسلماً بها قبلياً على نحو سابق على خلق النظرية. وهكذا يعيد المؤلف النظر في المواقف الثنائية بدءاً من ديكارت حتى الوجودية، مثلما يعيد تقييم المادية في طبعاتها المختلفة ليتوصل إلى اقتراح فهمه الجديد مزوداً بعدة تحليلية توفرها العلوم الحديثة في الفيزياء والكيمياء وفيزيزلوجيا الأعصاب.
