يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ثلاث دراسات كتبت في فترات متباعدة، ولكن هذه الدراسات يجمعها خيط واحد هو الاهتمام بالشعر، والشعر وحده، ذلك الكائن الذي تغرب حتى أصبح لا يعرفنا، وأصبحنا -أيضاً- لا نعرفه.
تأتي الدراسة الأولى (كتابة الظل في قصائد الأخضر بن يوسف للشاعر سعدي يوسف) واضعة اهتمامها الأساسي في إطار جزئية فكرية أرقت المبدع العربي على مر العصور والأزمنة، وهي طبيعة العلاقة الملتبسة بين الإنسان (الكائن المادي المعهود)، والظل أو الشاعر، ذلك الكيان، الذي لا يتكون من لحم ودم.
أما الدراسة الثانية (تحولات الضمير السردي في سيفيات المتنبي)، فهي دراسة تحاول الإفادة من التوجه الأسلوبي في دراسة الشعر، وخاصة النصوص الشعرية القديمة، وذلك من خلال محاولة تصفية ومعرفة الصوت الذي يحمل النص إلى المتلقي.
وفي هذه الدراسة هناك إشكاليات عديدة، منها اعتبار النص الشعري نصاً سردياً، وهو اعتبار بالرغم من المشاكل العديدة التي تكتنفه ولدت له مشروعية في العقود الأخيرة.
والدراسة الأخيرة (جماليات التقرير في القصيدة الحديثة) دراسة تحاول أن ترصد ظاهرة مهمة ترتبط بتخفيض اللغة الشعرية، واقترابها في أحيان ليست قليلة من اللغة التقريرية، وصعوبة هذا الموضوع تتجلى في طريقة تناوله، فالنقاد يشعرون بالضرورة بهذا التخفيض وبهذا التقرير، وبأن هناك جمالاً في ذلك التخفيض وذلك التقرير، ولكن يبقى كيف يمكن دراسة هذه الظاهرة، ووضعها في أطر وأنماط قابلة للبحث.
