يرصد "كتاب مكارم الأخلاق ومحاسن الآداب وبدائع الأوصاف وغرائب التشبيهات" المنسوب لأبي منصور عبد الملك بن محمّد ابن إسماعيل الثعالبيّ النيسابوريّ (350-429 هـ)، وهو كتابٌ في الأدب يعيده المحققان بلال الأرفه لي ورمزي بعلبكي اليوم إلى النور عبر "الدار العربية للعلوم، ناشرون"، وظائف الأدب الأخلاقيّة والاجتماعيّة والفكريّة والمهنيّة بما فيها فن المحاضرة؛ فضلًا عن أن دراسة الأخلاق والخصال – الكريمة منها والرذيلة - تعد جزءًا من نقاش أوسع حول الأخلاق في الحضارة العربية الإسلامية. ولهذا يُعَدّ كتاب مكارم الأخلاق - مع ملحقه - مَجْمَعًا أدبيًّا في الخلُق الحسن، ويضمّ اقتباسات تلائم الخطابين الاجتماعيّ والأدبيّ. وهو بذلك يعكس مكوّنات الأدب الثلاثة: السلوك، والثقافة الأدبيّة، والتعلّم.
يشتمل الكتاب على مقدّمةٍ قصيرة وثلاثة أبواب يتفرّع كلّ منها إلى فصول. الباب الأوّل بعنوان: "التحلّي بمكارم الأخلاق ومحاسن الآداب" ويتضمّن اثني عشر فصلًا؛ والباب الثاني بعنوان: "التزكّي عن مساوئ الأخلاق ومقابح الشيم" وفيه أحد عشر فصلًا؛ أمّا الباب الثالث فعنوانه: "بدائع الأوصاف وغرائب التشبيهات" وينقسم بدوره إلى أربعة فصول.
ويرد في نهاية الكتاب ملحقٌ طويلٌ بالأمثال السائرة، ومجموعها أربعمائة وعشرة موزّعة على ثمانية وعشرين فصلًا، ومرتبة ترتيبًا ألفبائيًّا.
