هذا الكتاب يكشف عن أسرار هذه المحيطات حيث يقدم أولاً تعريفاً بعالم المحيطات المدهش، وتروي بالمشاهد المصورة المثيرة قصة حياة المحيط من كائناته إلى النشاطات وقت الفراغ، هذا في أول قسم منه، أما في قسمه الثاني فيقدم معلومات ضرورية حول المحيطات ووظائفها وحياتها وبمساعدة الصور الفوتوغرافية والرسوم البيانية، وفي ملف الأسئلة المتداولة (القسم الثالث) يجيب الكتاب عن العديد من الأسئلة الهامة-لماذا البحر مالح؟ أما القسم الرابع فيكشف عن المجال المرجح في صناعات المحيط مثل الصيد وعلم الآثار القديمة.
تكمن أهمية هذا المؤلف في أنه يسند كل معلوماته على حقائق وأرقام ضرورية، ويمد بالمرجع الجاهز بلمحة. كما أنه يشتمل على حقائق وإحصائيات محيطية، مقارنات خط زمني. وهناك أيضاً مسرد شامل موضح بالصور، ويشرح المصطلحات التقنية المستعملة في هذا الكتاب.
