لعبت الفنون الجميلة في حقبة ماوتسي تونغ (1942 – 1976) دوراً فريداً، وذلك نظراً إلى أهمية الفنون الجميلة الصينية أثناء القرن العشرين. ومن المنظور الأيديولوجي، هيمنت "المحادثات في منتدى بهنان حول الآداب والفنون" والتي أطلقها ماوتسي تونغ على تقدّم الفنون الصينية وتطورها في تلك المرحلة، فاتبع الفنانون آنذاك المفاهيم التي طرحتها المحادثات والأيديولوجية الشيوعية والاشتراكية التي وجّهت مسار الصين الجديدة أثناء حقبة ماوتسي تونغ.
يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من أكثر من 900 عمل فني. وتُقدّم هذه الأعمال الفنية تجسيداً مفعماً بالحياة لطبيعة الفنون أثناء حقبة ماوتسي تونغ، كما تُظهر تطورها. وقد رُتبت هذه الأعمال تحت ثمانية مواضيع رئيسة وهي: صور ماوتسي تونغ، وتجسد التاريخ الثوري، والصور الاشتراكية، وصور العمال والفلاحين والجنود، والصراع الطبقي، ومجموعات الأقليات، والصور الأنثوية، والشباب. وتعبّر هذه المواضيع عن العلاقة المعقدة بين الفنون الجميلة في حقبة ماوتسي تونغ والمفاهيم القائمة خلفها، كما تعبر عن حقبة ماوتسي تونغ نفسها، وستساعد القارئ على فهم الفنون الجميلة التي كانت منتشرة في تلك الحقبة تحديداً.
