كان منشيوس، وهو مفكِّر عظيم ورجل دولة ومعلِّم عاش في فترة من التاريخ الصيني تُعرف بحقبة الممالك المتحارِبة (475–221 ق.م). وهو أهم شارح لعقائد كونفوشيوس، بعد المعلِّم نفسه. يقدِّم هذا الكتاب وصفاً دقيقاً للحياة الشاقة التي عاشها منشيوس، ويشرح بالتفصيل نظريته بأن "الإنسان يُولد بقلب طيب"، وتأييده لمبدأ وجوب تطبيق كل الحكام سياسة "إحسان". ويسلط الضوء بشكل خاص على الفكرة الديمقراطية لدى منشيوس بوجوب احترام الناس وتثمين قيمتهم وحُبّهم، مما يساعد القارئ على فهم تصرّفات منشيوس وآرائه، وجوهر أفكاره الموجودة في مجموعة أقواله، المستقاة من "كتاب منشيوس"، وهو أحد الكتب الكلاسيكية الأربعة للمدرسة الكونفوشيوسية. لذلك كان منشيوس يعد أهم ممثل للكونفوشية في عصره. وطابع الصلاح والتحدي لكل القوة الغاشمة التي نادى بها منشيوس لم تصقل الأشخاص بمثل عليا نبيلة فحسب، بل أثرت عميقاً على روح الشعب الصيني ككل. و"كتاب منشيوس" الذي يعرض بعضاً منه هذا الكتاب ألّفه منشيوس نفسه بأسلوب لاذع، يغرق في المنطق والتفكير الفلسفي الباهر. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، حلَّل عن كثب وطبَّق بشكل مناسب اقتباسات من "كتاب الأغاني" و"كتاب التاريخ"، وهما كتابان كلاسيكيان قديمان حتى في عصر منشيوس. وبالأخص، تُعتبر مناقشاته مع تلاميذه وحكماء آخرين، المدوَّنة في "كتاب منشيوس"، عقلانية ومثيرة للاهتمام للقارئ. لذلك كان لهذا الكتاب تأثير قوي على كل الأدب الصيني اللاحق، وكذلك على نواحي أخرى من الثقافة الصينية، حتى أنه أصبح بمثابة مادة إلزامية يقرأه كل المثقَّفين
