الأوبرا الصينية فنٌ وطني له تاريخٌ عريق فهي واحدة من ثلاثة أشكالٍ لثقافات الأوبرا الكبرى في العالم القديم، إضافة إلى التراجيديا والكوميديا الإغريقية والدراما السنسكريتية الهندية، التي تتفرع إلى حوالي 360 شكلاً من أشكال الأوبرا تنتشر في مناطق مختلفة من الصين، مع آلاف الأشكال الفنية التراثية الأخرى.
يرصد كتاب «الأوبرا في الصين» ثلاثة ألوانٍ من الفنون، تتضمنها الأوبرا الصينية وهي: الغناء الذي يرافقه الرقص الفلكلوري، والحوار الذي يرافقه الرقص الفولكلوري، والحوار الذي يرافقه الغناء، والمسرحية الهزلية. هذه الأشكال الثلاثة توصلت مؤلفتا الكتاب ماي ويدونغ وماي وي إلى أنها مستمدة من تقاليد الغناء والرقص التي كانت سائدة في العصور القديمة، وتندمج فيها فنونٌ مسرحية متشعبة تتفاخر بتاريخٍ عريق على مدى أجيال متعاقبة، ابتداءً من سلالة هان ووصولاً إلى فترات حكم سلالات تانغ، سونغ، جين، حتى تزدهر أخيراً في شكلٍ فني متكامل.
في هذا الكتاب القارئ على موعد مع مشاهد عروض أوبرالية مصورة مع نبذة عن تاريخها وأدواتها وممثليها وروادها مثل: "الكونكيو" وهي أقدم أنواع الأوبرا الصينية، و"أوبرا بكين" وهي واحدة من التقاليد الفنية الأكثر إمتاعاً في تاريخ الصين، و"أوبرا كانتونيون" أو (الأوبرا الضخمة) وهي فن للأداء يندمج فيه الغناء والإلقاء والتمثيل، وقتال الألعاب البهلوانية، بمصاحبة الموسيقى الجميلة. و"أوبرا وايوجو" وهي أوبرا تقليدية تركز على الغناء والموضوع في أغلب مسرحيات وايوجو قصة حب بين شاب موهوب وفتاة جميلة ضمن سيناريو محدد.
