يتألف هذا الكتاب من أربعة أجزاء، الجزء الأول يقدم فهماً لعملية التخطيط لمؤسسة ذات طابع عائلي، وأهمية التخطيط بالنسبة للعائلات التي تمتلك مؤسسات، ويبحث عملية التخطيط المتوازي. أما الجزء الثاني فيدور حول التخطيط للعائلة، والالتزام العائلي، وتشجيع المساهمة العائلية، وكيفية تحضير الجيل الجديد من العائلة من إداريين وفادة، وتطوير الملكية الفعالة.
يهتم الجزء الثالث بتقييم إمكانات المؤسسة الإستراتيجية، ودراسة الاستراتيجيات المحتملة، وصولاً للاستراتيجية النهائية وقرار إعادة الاستثمار. أما الجزء الرابع والأخير فإنه يبحث دمج خطط العائلة والمؤسسة، وكذلك دور مجلس الإدارة في التخطيط للمؤسسة العائلية. وقد تمت إضافة ملاحق ذات أهمية تتضمن تقييماً للمهنة وورقة عمل وعدة دراسات واستبيانات متصلة بموضوع التخطيط للمؤسسة العائلية.
