يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه ثلاثة عشرة حوارًا أٌجريت مع ثمانية من أهم الفلاسفة الألمان في القرن العشرين، وهم: مارتن هيدجر، ماكس هوركهايمر، إرنست بلوخ، تيودور أدورنو، هيربرت ماركوزه، يورجن هابرماس، هانز - جيورج جادَمَر، أكسِل هونِت.
تتنوع هذه الحوارات ما بين الحوارات المباشرة مع فيلسوف بعينه، وأخرى ثنائية بين اثنين من الفلاسفة. تتناول هذه الحوارات مسارات الحداثة ومآلاتها في القرن العشرين، وكما يتضح من أسماء هؤلاء الفلاسفة فقد تركز الاختيار بدرجة كبيرة على رموز النظرية النقدية الألمانية، ممثلة في مدرسة فرانكفورت بأجيالها الثلاثة، بالإضافة إلى فلاسفة آخرين يمثلون أعمدة الفلسفة الألمانية المعاصرة.
تتميز هذه الحوارات عن الكتب النظرية بتسليطها الضوء على الجوانب العملية في أفكار هؤلاء الفلاسفة الذين عايشوا أحداثًا كبرى في القرن العشرين، بداية من الحرب العالمية الأولى، وحتى الثورة الطلابية في الستينات والسبعينات، وصولًا إلى حقبة الليبرالية الجديدة المَعيشة، ورؤيتهم لها، ومواقفهم العملية منها، ومدى اتساق هذه المواقف مع أفكارهم النظرية من عدمه.
إن هذا الكتاب بمثابة تأريخ للفلسفة الألمانية وتياراتها في القرن العشرين، وهو كذلك مدخل شامل لأفكار مدرسة فرانكفورت، كما أنه يتضمن نقدًا للحداثة ومآلاتها يعدُّه جملة من الباحثين أكثر جدية وعمقًا وأصالة من النقد الفرنسي الذي غَلب على تيارات ما بعد الحداثة، ولذلك فلا غناء عنه لكل المهتمين بهذا المجال.
