إن المهمة التعليمية التي يقوم بها المختصون في الدراسات الإسلامية صعبة جداً. فمن ناحية، هنالك جهل واشتباه كبير حول موضوع الإسلام في معظم أوروبا وأميركا، والذي تم تعزيزه الآن بفعل المأساة الأخيرة. ومن ناحية أخرى، هنالك متطرفون من الدول الإسلامية قاموا باستخدام لغة الإسلام لتبرير الأعمال المروعة المليئة بالعنف. ويضيع في هذه المواجهة مئات الملايين من المسلمين القاطنين في أرجاء العالم اليوم والذين أردجوا تحت لائحة الدخلاء على الحضارة الغربية، رغم أنهم لا يشاركون تلك الرؤية المصيرية المتشددة التي يعتنقها أمثال أسامة بن لادن. إن أولئك الذين قاموا منا بدراسة نص القرآن وكتابات كبار الشعراء وتاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية، ليشعرون بالأسى العميق من جراء ما ارتكبه المتطرفون الجدد من تشويه وتحريف للنصوص والرموز الإسلامية. وأي ألم في النفس هو أعظم من ذلك الذي يشعر به أغلبية المسلمين الذين سئموا أعمال الإرهاب ويشعرون في الوقت نفسه بالاستياء العميق من جراء السطوة الإستعمارية الحديثة والمتواصلة على بلادهم؟
