"سألته لاهية: هل سألهمك يوماً شعراً جميلاً مثل الذي أنشدتني؟، ألست أنت التي ألهمت شعراء غيري وأقدر مني، فأقرضوك القصيد وتغنّ,ا بجمالك، كما فعل شيخنا النابغة؟!، النابغة؟!، هكذا يزعم شيطانه! لقد ذكر اسمك ووصف متجردك في قصيدته...، لم أسمع بهذه القصيدة!، فلتأخذي مزهرك فسأنشدها لك!، أخذت مزهرها تضرب أوتاره وهي متلهفة، تستنطق لبيداً بنظراتها".
هذه الرواية التي تدور أحداثها في موسم الحجّ من سنة ثلاث وخمسين بعد عام الفيل هي الأولى من ثلاثية تتناول موضوع الحج عبر العصور، بدءاً من العصر الجاهلي وحتى سنة ثلاث وخمسين بعد الحادي عشر من سبتمبر. ومن بين شخوص هذا الجزء الأول الشاعر لبيد والمومس مهدد وهاذر شيطان النابغة وأسماء العدوية، أجمل امرأة في العالم.
