بين تاريخ عائلي لم تصنعه، وحاضر تغترب عنه تقبع بطلة رواية "جارية" للروائية البحرينية "منيرة سوار" لتحكي لنا قصة "جارية" أو "جورية" الفتاة ذات الأصول الأفريقية، التي تعيش مع جدها ولا تعرف شيئاً عن والدها "قيل لي إنه مات منذ 27 عاماً، بعد ولادتي بأشهر معدودة. ليس لدينا في البيت ما يشي بأنه كان لي فعلاً أب كبقية الناس. فلم أجد له صورة معلقة على جدار، ولا رسالة مكتوبة بخط يده لأي كان .. كبرت وكبرت وكبرت، وليس لي أب أعلق صورته على الجدار ..."، وفي رحلة البحث عن جذورها تكتشف الفتاة ما هو أشد من كونها من أصول أفريقية سوداء الجلد بل أنها إبنة غير شرعية، تبحث عن والدها الذي تطمع أن ينتشلها من عالم السود – كونه رجلاً أبيض من عائلة عريقة – فتفشل، يندلع صراع في داخلها، ما يجعل منها امرأة مأزومة، تحاول الخروج من هذا الواقع؛ بتحقيق حلمها في مشروع نجاري خاص بها فتنجح في إدارة صالون تجميل، الذي تعهد به إلى "هيثم" اللبناني الأصل، الذي حلمت بالزواج منه، كونه رجلاً أبيض، لتزهد بإبن خالتها "عبيد" الذي كانت تصاب بحالة من الغثيان لمجرد فكرة الإرتباط بأسود لأنها ستظل تنجب سوداً بالمقابل "عبيد ينجبون عبيد" . ولن يمر وقت طويل حتى تكتشف الفتاة أن "هيثم"، الرجل الأبيض من الخارج ليس رجلاً فعلاً من الداخل بل يعاني من حالة شذوذ، والأب الأبيض، لا يبدو أكثر من إنسان قذر الملافظ لا يشبه بياض بشرته في شيء.
في ختام الرواية ترتبط "جورية" بـ "عبيد" متصالحة مع نفسها وعرفها وجذورها مستمرة في عملها، فترضى عن لونها لأنها رأت أن ليس كل ما نراه أسوداً هو كذلك حقاً ، فثمة سواد يقبع خلف الأقنعة البيضاء.
وبعد، "جارية" رواية متماسكة، تعري كثيراً من ممارسات أبناء العرب في بلاد الخارج، وتهربهم من المسؤولية، وتفكك كثيراً من مظاهر الزيف الإجتماعي، بلغة سردية حيّة تجمع بين مستويات شتى، تقدم عبرها منيرة سوار نصاً روائياً مشغولاً بحرفية واضحة، وبمسؤولية تامة.
وقد حصلت هذه الرواية على جائزة كتارا للرواية العربية للعام 2015
