ولد في يوم 13 جوان 1945 م في حي (العين الباردة) بالقرب من الطبيعة بمدينة الجزائر، تعلم في صباه اللغة العربية في المدارس الحرة التي كانت تشرف عليها جمعية العلماء المسلمين الجزائريين، أما الفرنسية فقد تعلمها في المدارس الرسمية الفرنسية النظامية، وجاء شغفه بالأدب عن طريق الرسم أولاً، ثم الموسيقى، وعلل ذلك في قوله "اللغة أقدر بكثير على التعبير عن خوالج النفس وصخب الحياة من الأدوات الفنية الأخرى، لذلك رسوت في ميناء الأدب". تفتح على التراث الإنساني، سواء العربي الإسلامي أو الأجنبي، فقرأ القرآن الكريم والحديث الشريف، والآثار الأدبية، كما قرأ للكتاب الفرنسيين وخاصة أدباء القرن 19، وشعراء الثلاثينات والأربعينات من هذا القرن، وقرأ للعديد من الكتاب باللغة الإنجليزية، وعلى رأسهم الروائي الأمريكي "ارنست همنغواي"، قال عنه الطاهر وطار "إنني آمل أن أرى في أعماله القادمة كاتباً بناء لروح الإنسان التي حطمها يأس قرون طويلة من الاستغلال والقهر، بناء لنظرة واثقة في المستقبل وكاتباً مهدّماً أيضاً، مهدماً لكل المفاهيم الخاطئة". عمل في الصحافة الجزائرية منذ سنة 1962م، وفي أثناء ذلك واصل دراسته الجامعية في جامعة الجزائر، فتخرج بشهادة الإجازة في الترجمة (عربي فرنسي إنجليزي).
انتدب للعمل في وزارة الإعلام عدة سنوات ثم عين نائباً لرئيس تحرير مجلة (المجاهد)، ومازال في منصبه إلى اليوم وهو عضو عامل في اتحاد الكتاب الجزائريين.

يدور هذا النصّ الروائيّ حول الوضع الجزائريّ المتأزّم، الذي تصوغه نخبة عسكريّة متسلّطة وجماعات دينيّة متطرّفة، وضياع إجتماعيّ، وأسى على ثورة وطنيَّة مجهضة.
بنى الروائيّ عمله متوسّلاً أدوات فنيّة ملائمة: الرمز، السخرية السوداء، الشخصيّات المقابلة، الحوار الداخليّ، ووثائق إجتماعيّة تاريخيّة، وشيئاً من الكتابة المباشرة التي تحتجّ على وضع سلطويّ يستعمل الجزائريّين ولا يحل مشاكلهم.
