"كنتُ أنظر مراراً إلى صفِّ الأشجار التي تُقابلنا، وإلى البيوت البيضاء المتناثرة حوله. قد تصل هشاشةُ خطّ التماس في الحروب إلى أن يكون مجرّد مجموعةِ أشجارٍ خضراء؛ وقد تصل قسوةُ الأشجار في الحرب إلى أن تتحوَّل إلى خطوط تماسٍّ يحصل قربها موتٌ كثير".
