ولد الكاتب فاسكو براتوليني في 19 أكتوبر 1913 من عائلة عمالية بفلورنسا، وتوفي أواخر سنة 1990. لم يذهب إلى مدرسة بل علم نفسه وتعلم من الحياة مباشرة، وعاش فعلا الخبرات التي يرويها في أعماله.
