تُرجمتْ هذه الرواية الهنديّة إلى ست عشرة لغة عالميّة. وهي صورة إبداعيّة عن ثقافة محلّيّة يمتزج فيها الماضي الموغل في قدمه مع الحاضر الذي لا يستطيع إبطالَه والخروج به عن دائرة الحنين القاتل: أموليا المهاجر من مدينته إلى سونغارة سعيًا وراء الرزق وهربًا من ماضٍ يؤرقه، وزوجته كانابالا التي ابتعدت عن أهلها، وابنهما نرمال الذي هام حبًّا بتاريخ بلاده العريق. وتمتدّ الأحداث على مدى ثلاثة أجيال، ويظلّ الحنين إلى الحبّ عنصرًا طاغيًا: الحبّ الكارثي بين نرمال وشانتي، والحب المأساوي بين السيّدة بارنوم وعشيقها، والحبّ بين ابنة نرمال والفتى موكوندا اليتيم المجهول الأصل.
هي رواية الحنين المستحيل، حنين يطحنه الزمن والعادات ووضاعة البشر واستغلالهم. رواية عن تاريخ الهند السياسي المفعم بالاضطرابات العنيفة والآمال العظيمة والخيبات المريرة. رواية عن الطبيعة المفقودة والهجرة والعزلة والحبّ.
