"وهكذا، إذن، قرّ عزمي على تأليف هذا الكتاب، لكن ليس سعياً وراء شهرة أو مكسب أو خلود، فلا خالد غير الله، بل بحثاً عن راحة الضمير، إن شاء الله عزّ وجل، والحق أنه ما تصورتني في يوم من الأيام قد أرفع قلمي لتأليف كتاب سيكون بلا ريب الأول والأخير، أتحدث فيه عن نفسي. وإنني ألتزم أمام الله، سبحانه وتعالى، إنني لن أغفل أي شيء ولن أحجب أي أمر، إيماناً مني بأنه لا حياء في الدين وأن لا خافية تخفى هناك، فلن يكون إلا بسبب النسيان أو الخطأ أو لسوء التقدير. وعليه فإن كل ما سأذكره صدق لا غبار عليه، إلا فيما يتعلق باسمي، أنا العبد الضعيف، وباسم زوجتي وبأسماء الأشخاص الآخرين الذين سيرد ذكرهم وأيضاً باسم المدينة التي تزوجت وعشت فيها مع ضاوية على سنة الله ورسوله العزيز. وإني أرجو الله العلي العليم أن يوفقني وأن يجعل من هذا العمل شفائي ومن هذا القلم دوائي، وأن يطفئ نار الفتنة بين المسلمين في بلدي وينشر الطمأنينة والأمان في ربوع وطني..".
رواية تحمل سرديات ذاتية تكشف عن داخل المجتمع الجزائري من خلال شخصية البطل الممزق بين الغربة والانتماء. هي تكشف عن موهبة لافتة وخبرة في فن السرد ولغة بسيطة مصقولة تؤالف بين الرشاقة والتوتر، وتخفي قدرة واضحة على البناء الفني لجهة تداخل الأنواع والأزمنة، والانتقال الذكي بين الماضي والحاضر بما يتيح الكشف عن التناقضات التي تشيع في المجتمع الجزائري. والرواية حائزة على جائزة مالك حداد لعام 2001-2002 مناصفة مع رواية "بحر الصمت" لياسمينة صالح.
