جيرترود ستاين ( 1874 - 1946 ) Gertrude Stein شاعرة ، روائية وناقدة أمريكية ، ظلت سنوات مقتربة من باريس وكانت مثار نقاشات في العشرينيات . ستاين من عائلة ثرية ، ارتضت الحياة الخصبة في العاصمة الفرنسية ، فأقامت فيها مع سكرتيرتها أليس ب . توكلاس Elice B . Toklas التي يظن أنها مؤلفة سيرة حياة اليس ب . توكلاس . لم تعد إلى أمريكا إلا مرة واحدة لتحاضر هناك ، وكانت زيارة قصيرة . اهتمت بالرسامين : بيكاسو ، ماتيس ، براك وجان كريز . وكتبت عن الأولين سنة ۱۹۱۲ . الآنسة ستاين أصبحت من بعد ناقدة فنية ونصيرة للفنانين ترعاهم . أسلوبها الفريد المتميز أفاد من نظريات وليم جيمس في علم النفس ومن الرسامين الفرنسيين المحدثين ، هي تعنى بالكلمات من أجل صوتها وإيحاءاتها ، أكثر من عنايتها بمعانيها الحرفية . لها طريقة معقدة في تكرار الفكرة الكلامية الواحدة وتنويعها . تتحاشى التنقيط ونظام الجملة التقليدي . وكتابات ستاين كلها تتسم بالتأكيد على الانطباعات وعلى حالات العقل الخاصة أكثر مما على رواية القصة . صياغتها محدودة وبسيطة ، مع ميل واضح للكلام الاعتيادي الموجز . ' تلك هي جيرترود ستاين ، وذلك هو أسلوبها الخاص الذي لم تكن مدينة به لأحد » ، الأسلوب الذي أفاد منه كتاب معروفون مثل شير ود أندرسون الذي نال منها فوائد تكنيكية عظيمة ، تعلم من كتابيها ثلاث سير » و « براعم طرية » ضرورة الاعتماد على الصناعة الفنية التي جعلت من نقل الحقائق عملية معقدة . وبفضل هذا الاحترام للتكنيك - الذي كان من السمات المميزة للعصر - استطاع أندرسون أن يلتف على عدم التماسك المنطقى المتأصل في موضوعه ، وبالرغم من استفادته من أسلوب ستاين ، وبالرغم أيضاً من ميله لجيرترود ستاين التي كوّن معها صداقة قوية ، لم يخف عن فطنته أن كتاباتها لم تنجح في نقل كل أفكارها وإيحاءاتها . لذلك كتب عنها سنة ۱۹۲۳ : ' إنها هامة لا بالنسبة للجمهور ، بل بالنسبة للفنان الذي يتخذ من الكلمات مادة العمله ) .
