كاتب ومترجم مصري، هو من أبرع المترجمين الذين نقلوا روائع الأدب والفكر الإنجليزي والأمريكي إلى اللغة العربية، ترجم العديد من كلاسيكيات الأدب العالمي مثل "المفتش العام" و"روبنسون كروزو" و"الآمال الكبرى" و"أوليفر تويست" و"توم سوير" و"كنوز الملك سليمان" بالإضافة لروايات عديدة أخرى، وترجم عدة كتب في التاريخ المصري القديم مثل "أم الحضارات - 4 أجزاء" و"كليوباترا" و"مجوهرات الفراعنة" و"مراكب خوفو" و"نفرتيتي" وغيرها.
أما ككاتب فقد ألّف 60 كتاباً في الاقتصاد والتاريخ المصري القديم و16 كتاباً في الأدب والفن، وفي سنواته الأخيرة كتب مقالات فكرية في جريدة الوفد.
على جانب آخر، كتب عدداً من السيناريوهات لأفلام تسجيلية عن التاريخ المصري القديم والآثار الإسلامية بمصر وأعلام العرب وقصص القرآن بالإضافة إلى عديد من البرامج الثقافية بالتليفزيون والإذاعة المصرية وهيئة الإذاعة البريطانية.
كان عضواً بأكثر من لجنة ثقافية حكومية، كما كان رئيس تحرير سلسلة "روائع الأدب العالمي للناشئين" التي كانت تصدرها الهيئة المصرية العامة للكتاب.
كان حاصلاً على ليسانس في القانون والاقتصاد عام 1955 ودبلوم عال في القانون البحري عام 1975.
ولد "مختار السويفي" عام 1933 في حي باب الشعرية بالقاهرة وتوفي عن سن 72 عاماً.
