"ترويض الخيال" ، هو حوارات مع خمسة عشر كوكباً لامعاً في سماء الأدب العالمي ، آثرتُ أن أسبق ترجمة الحوارات بتقديم نبذة كافية عن كل كاتب وكاتبة ممن تناولتهم في كتابي هذا . ذلك أنني أؤمن أن كتب الحوارات مع الكُتّاب شيء ضروري ومفيد للقارئ العربي ، سواء كان نخبوياً أو عادياً ، فهي تقدّم معلومات وافية عن خلفيات الكُتّاب الاجتماعية والثقافية ، فضلاً عن آرائهم الفكرية والفلسفية والسياسية ، وتقنياتهم في الكتابة الإبداعية ، وطقوسهم في ممارسة هذه الحرفة المقدسة .
في الواقع ، إن اهتمامي بالحوارات مع الكُتّاب يرجع إلى ثمانينات القرن المنصرم ، حينما نشرتُ أول حوار مترجم مع الكاتب القرغيزي جنكيز آيتماتوف في مجلة الأقلام العراقية سنة 1987 . ومنذ ذلك الحين حتى الآن لم يكنْ ولعي هذا ناجماً عن الانبهار بالآخر والإعجاب به ، ولا نابعاً من شعوري - ككاتب عربي - بالنقص إزاء الآداب العالمية ، بل كانت غايتي أن أقدم ثقافة أدبية موسوعية للقارئ العراقي والعربي ، تغني الكاتب الشاب ، وتفيد كل المغرمين بالأدب ، وكل الذين يستحوذ عليهم الفضول الفكري والمعرفي .
تبدو بعض الأسئلة الموجهة للكُتّاب صادمةً غالباً ، وحتى استفزازية ، غير أن مبعثها هو سبر أغوار التجربة الأدبية ، واستخراج ما لدى المؤلف من أفكار وآراء ورؤى وانطباعات ، فهذه هي مواصفات المحاوِر الناجح ، على ما نعتقد .
وكان لا بد لي ، خلال إعداد هذا الكتاب للنشر، أن أتحلى برحابة الصدر لأسمح للكُتّاب والكاتبات أن يدلوا بآرائهم ، ويعبروا عن أحلامهم ، ويكشفوا أسرارهم وذكرياتهم وتأملاتهم ، كي أعطي هذه المهمة استحقاقاتها ومزاياها الحقيقية الأصيلة . إذ ليس من حقي أن أصادر حريتهم مثلما لا أسمح لأحد أن يجردني من حريتي في التعبير ، وهي جزء من الحريات التي تكفلها دساتير دول العالم كلها ، وإن كانت – أحياناً – مدوّنة على الورق فقط .
