لوحظ أن منشآت الأطفال في عدد من الأماكن تقام دون الاهتمام بالتصميم الداخلي فيها وذلك بسبب ضعف المعرفة بأثره على النواحي النفسية والسلوكية وقدرته على تشكيل عامل جذب كبير للطفل.
ومن أهم مظاهر غياب التصميم الداخلي الناجح للمنشآت الأطفال:
عدم تناسب منشآت الأطفال الموجودة حالياً مع مرحلتهم العمرية حيث تظهر مجموعة من الأخطاء أهمها:
1- المواد المستخدمة في الإكساء غير مناسبة للطفل من ناحية السلامة الجسدية والصحة النفسية وغياب المواد الطبيعية.
2- الدراسة اللونية غالباً ما تكون مغلفة أو أنها تستخدم بشكل غير مدروس فيغدو المكان سبباً للتوتر أو خالقاً لحالة جمود، وبالتالي لا تتناسب مع وظيفة الفراغ الداخلي.
3- عدم وجود حيز كافٍ من المساحة لحركة الطفل، حيث يحتاج الطفل ما لا يقل 1.5 M2 بحسب المعايير الدولية.
4- التصميم العام للمنشأة ومفروشاتها لا تتناسب مع الأهداف الموضوعة لها فغالباً ما تكون مصممة لتأدية وظيفة أخرى.
5- عدم الاهتمام بأهمية النواحي النفسية والسلوكية عند الأطفال وانعكاس ذلك على الفرد والمجتمع.
ومن هنا تنبع ضرورة هذه الدراسة في محاولة لوضع حلول لهذه المشاكل.
