فكرة هذا الكتاب، تنطلق من فرضية أن النظرية النقدية والأدبية قد عادت مرة أخرى إلى التفسير والتأويل، وفي هذه العودة، عودة إلى المجرى الرئيسي لنهر الفكر الإنساني. إنها رد اعتبار للذات وللموضوع وللسياقات ولكل عناصر العملية الإبداعية. فبعد كل الحديث المفرط في حماسه عن عزل النص الأدبي عن سياقه التاريخي والاجتماعي والتعامل معه كبنية مكتفية بذاتها وبعد كل الحديث عن (تحرير الدال) و(مطاردة العلامات) وتفكيك مركزية العقل وبنية العلامة اللغوية، ها هي النظرية النقدية ترد مجدداً الاعتبار إلى العلامة والمعنى والسياق التاريخي والاجتماعي ويعود الحديث من جديد عن المعنى والدلالة وعن التفسير والتأويل والتحليل.
وقد أتاحت العودة إلى التأويل فرصة ذهبية للباحثين والنقّاد في العالم العربي ربما لأول مرة في التاريخ الحديث، للمساهمة مع الآخرين في تأسيس نظرية للتأويل انطلاقاً من تراثهم الضخم واستلهاماً لأحدث ما أنجزته البشرية من معارف. فالثقافة العربية الإسلامية هي ثقافة النص والمعنى ويمثّل التفسير والتأويل الوقود المحرِّك لهذه الثقافة. فلا عجب أن ورث العرب أضخم تراث في فنون التأويل وعلومه.
