يعتبر موضوع هذا الكتاب الذي يركز فيه على التقويم الذاتي والتطوير والإصلاح والتجديد الذاتي للمؤسسة المدرسية لمن أهم القضايا التربوية التي تستأثر اهتمام قادة التربية في جميع دول العالم في هذا العصر، وذلك لأن فعالية التقويم الذاتي تمتد إلى كل عنصر من عناصر العملية التعليمية، وتسهم في تطوير دورة العمل، وتحسين مخرجات التعليم، ورفع الكفاءة الإنتاجية للمؤسسة المدرسية.
وبشكل عام تتكون مادة هذا الكتاب من ستة فصول، عرضت لما يلي من موضوعات: الفصل الأول وخصص للمؤسسة المدرسية والتعامل معها على أنها وحدة تربوية أساسية في النظام التربوي تسهم في عملية التغيير النوعي، وفيه تمّ عرض التحديات التي تواجه هذه المؤسسة ومهمات قائدها وكفاياته، واختتم هذا الفصل بتحديد المعالم الأساسية للمؤسسة المدرسية في القرن الحادي والعشرين. أما الفصل الثاني فقد خصص لعرض أنماط تقديم المؤسسة المدرسية (التقويم الذاتي، التقويم الداخلي، التقويم الخارجي)، وأهمية التقويم بأنماطه المختلفة في رفع الكفاءة الإنتاجية للمؤسسة المدرسية. والفصل الثالث من هذا الكتاب تمّ فيه تصميم آلية للتقويم الذاتي والتطوير الذاتي للمؤسسة المدرسية. وتضمن الفصل الرابع تصميم إطار مرجعي للتقويم الذاتي للمؤسسة المدرسية، واختتم هذا الفصل بوضع لائحة لتقويم مؤشرات الأداء في المؤسسة المدرسية. ونظراً لأهمية المعلم واستراتيجيات التعليم التي تؤكد على الأسلوب العلمي في حل المشكلات، وتحسين جودة التعليم وتطوير الكفاءة الإنتاجية للمؤسسة المدرسية خصص الفصل الخامس لهذا الغرض. أما الفصل السادس والأخير في هذا الكتاب فقد حرص فيه على وضع رؤية مستقبلية لتطوير التعليم في العالم العربي.
