تدور أحداث الرواية حول عائلة إقطاعية في الريف الجنوبي العراقي في محافظة ميسان، إبان العهد الملكي العراقي، وتنتهي بسقوطه وإعلان الجمهورية وما رافقها من تغيُّرات سياسية وتحولات اجتماعية، متلمسة في تمثيلاتها السردية علاقة العوائل الإقطاعية بطبقة الفلاحين، وعلى الخط الدرامي للإحداث وحكايتها، تتشكل سرديات انثروبولوجية للكشف عن الهوية الثقافية للمجتمع الريفي من قبيل التمثيل للعادات والتقاليد والطقوس والتصورات والمعتقدات واللهجات…الخ. على المستوى التقني، تشتغل الرواية على أسلوب التقطيع المشهدي (السينمائي) للأحداث، وتسيير حركة الشخصيات وفقاً لمخطط سير الحكاية من دون أن يتدخل بالكشف عن أعماق الشخصية وهتك جوانياتها النفسية عبر التداعيات المونولوجية والخطابات الذاتية، مكتفياً ببعض الجمل الاعتراضية والوقفات الإشارية التعريفية للفصل بين خطابات الشخصيات التي تتناوب على تشكيل الحكاية الإطارية من دون أن تتصدر أية شخصيات المشهد الروائي وتستحوذ على بطولة الرواية، إذ كل شخصية لها دورها ومساحة تمثيلها السردي وخطابها وهويتها.
تتسم رواية قلعة طاهر على أنها ذات خصوصية، نظراً لأنها تتمحور وتشتغل على بيئة لم يكشف تماماً عن تضاريسها الجيو-ثقافية في زمن له سياسته ومشاغله وتحولاته.
