تتخذ الكاتبة "آنا كارسون" من شخصية أسطورية إفريقية قديمة، كتب عنها "ستيسكورس" قضيدة غنائية طويلة على ورق البردي، مادة لكتابة رواية شعرية بعنوان "سيرة ذاتية للأحمر" ، وتلك القصيدة تسمى جريونيس، وتخبرنا عن الوحش الأحمر المجنح الغريب الذي عاش على جزيرة تسمى آريتيا (والتي هي صفة تعني "المكان الأحمر") وهذا الوحش كان يرعى قطيعاً من الماشية الحمراء السحرية حتى جاء يوم قدم فيه البطل هرقل عبر البحر وقتله، ليستولي على تلك الماشية ... لنقرأ المقطع الآتي:
"كل الأشياء المعروفة عن جريون : كان يحب البرق، وكان يعيش على جزيرة أمه التي كانت حورية من النهر الذي يركض نحو البحر. وكان والده أداة تدر ذهباً، يقول شوليا العجوز أن ستيسكورس قال إن جريون كانت له ست أيد وستة أقدام وأجنحة، وكان أحمر، وإن ماشيته الحمراء أثارت الحسد، وإن هرقل جاء وقتله من أجل ماشيته والكلب أيضاً ...".
قدم للكتاب بمقدمة المترجم مأمون الرائدي يقول فيها "أن ستيسكورس جاء بعد هوميرس وقبل جيدترود شتاين، في فترة صعبة بالنسبة إلى شاعر. ولد حوالي العام (650 ق.م) على الساحل الشمالي لجزيرة صقلية في مدينة تسمى هيميرا ... وهناك عدد من المدائح القديمة ترتبط بذكر اسمه "هو أعظم هوميرية من شعراء الشعر الغنائي" . ويقول لونجينوس: "إنه يجعل تلك القصص القديمة جديدة". ويضيف "إذا وجدت النص صعباً، فأنت لست الوحيد لقد تعامل الزمن بقسوة مع ستيسكورس، ولم ينقل أي مقطع أطول من ثلاثين سطراً، فقصاصات ورق البردي تحجب بقدر ما تقول. وتم نشر كل ما عثر عليه من مقاطع ستيسكورس في الأصل اليوناني ثلاثة عشرة مرة حتى الآن ...".
تتألف الرواية من (47) عنواناً تصف تجربة جريون الخاصة؛ وحياته الحمراء كصبي وكلبه الصغير، وتتضمن مشاهد النداء حار من والدته لهرقل بالتوقف عن قتل جريون، ولقطات أخرى متقطعة لهرقل وهو يقترب من جهة البحر، ووميض من الآلهة في السماء يؤذن بموت جريون وكلبه الصغير على يد هرقل بهراوته الشهيرة.
