للدكتور مصطفى الفقي باع طويل في الحياة السياسية والثقافية على حدٍّ سواء. أما في المجال الأكاديمي، فقد قام بتدريس العلوم السياسية لسنوات طويلة بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، ثم تولى رئاسة الجامعة البريطانية بمصر في السنوات الثلاث الأولى لإنشائها. وفي المجال السياسي، شغل منصب سفير مصر في النمسا وعدد من الدول الأجنبية الأخرى، كما كان مندوب مصر لدى الوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية، ثم مندوبًا دائمًا لها في جامعة الدول العربية
وقد اتجهت أنشطته في السنوات الأخيرة إلى العمل البرلماني ومؤتمراته الدولية؛ حيث ظل يشغل منصب رئيس لجنة العلاقات الخارجية بالبرلمان لمدة عشر سنوات. وكرَّس حياته لقضيتين أساسيتين؛ الأولى هي قضية الإصلاح الفكري والسياسي، وإيقاف كلِّ أشكال التمييز ضد الأقليات في المجتمع. أما الثانية فهي حول القضية العربية ومفهوم الوحدة في إطارها المعاصر
