تشمل اهتماماته البحثية التاريخ الاقتصادي والاجتماعي والسياسي للشرق الأوسط منذ عام 1800 وإلى اليوم، فضلاً عن نظريات الإمبريالية، بما فيها الاحتلال العسكري.
يدرّس الآن في جامعة هارفارد الأمريكية، وكان سابقاً مدير مركز جامعة هارفارد لدراسات الشرق الأوسط وعضوًا في هيئة التدريس في جامعة أكسفورد حيث خدم مرات عدة كمدير مركز الشرق الأوسط في كلية سانت أنتوني.
بالإضافة إلى دراساته يكتب بالإنجليزية في جريدتي الأهرام ودار الحياة .
Book Description
للمرة الأولى، كتابٌ يعود إلى جذور نظام الحكم الذي ساد في العالم العربي منذ أوائل القرن العشرين، ويتطرّق إلى ديناميكياته بالتفصيل. لماذا هذا النظام النمطي؟ وكيف خلق شرعية شعبية له على أساس النجاح الاقتصادي والتلاعب بالدستور والانتخابات وقمع وصول المعلومات؟
يدخل أوين، وهو المؤرخ الرائد في شؤون الشرق الأوسط، في عمق السياق التاريخي الضروري لفهم ثورات الشعوب العربية ويبرهن أن ظاهرة الرؤساء الأبديين هي نتاج الظروف التاريخية، وليست نتيجة محدّدة سلفاً للقبلية العربية أو للعقيدة الإسلامية كما ادّعت دراساتٌ عديدة نشرت حول الربيع العربي.
في كتابه هذا، يقارب أوين بين الرؤساء العرب ودونات المافيا الذين يراقبون بعضهم بعضاً فيستخرجون العِبَر من التجارب الأخرى، كلُّ ذلك تحت دعمٍ مؤطّرٍ من الجامعة العربية التي وفّرت لهم جلباباً داعماً لطموحاتهم.
ليس هذا كتاباً عاماً، إنما هو كتابٌ يدخل في خصوصيات كل بلدٍ عربي ويضيء على نقاط الاختلاف أو الالتقاء بينه وبين الأقطار العربية الأخرى.
وليس هذا بحثاً شبيهاً بما كتب حول الثورات العربية، لا من حيث المنهجية ولا المضمون ولا العمق التاريخي.
