يقدّم شيركو كرمانج تحليلاً نقدياً لتطوّر الهويّة الوطنية العراقية ولعملية الوحدة الوطنية، متتبّعاً في ذلك تاريخاً حافلاً بالخصومات والعنف منذ تشكّل العراق الحديث في العام 1921 وحتى أواسط العام 2012.
يدحض كرمانج الأساليب التي تلقي باللائمة، عن العنف الطائفي الذي ألمّ بالعراق، بطرق مختلفة، على ميراث النظام البعثي أو على الغزو الأميركي، فيسبر أغوار الآليات السياسية والاجتماعية التي تشابكت عبر عقودٍ من الزمن. وينصبّ تركيزه على الصراعات الجارية بين سنّة العراق وشيعته وكرده، وعلى التحدّيات التي تواجه صناعة أمّةٍ ما عندما لا تتشارك الجماعات المعنيّة هويةً واحدةً ولا ترتبط بوطنٍ واحد.
إن عمله هذا، الشامل في مداه والغنيّ بالرؤى الجديدة، يعدّ مساهمة هامّة في النقاشات الدائرة بشأن مستقبل الدولة العراقية.
