يتساءل الكاتب بمنتهى الوضوح، ودون أي لبس، رغم ما في الوضوح من قسوة: هل لبناننا الجميل هذا وطن نهائي؟ وإذا كان كذلك، هل هو أمّة مكتملة أم جزء من أمّة أوسع وأشمل؟ وإذا كان جزءاً من أمّة فأيها: الإسلامية أم العربية أم السورية، أم الثلاث معاً؟ وإذا كان أمّة مكتملة الشروط فأيها أيضاً: أمّة لبنانيّة أم أمّة ماذا؟... ثم هل القضايا اللبنانيّة الملحّة تختلف اختلافاً جذرياً عن القضايا السورية أو العربية أو الإسلامية؟ وفي المجال نفسه؛ السياسي والاقتصادي والاجتماعي وحتى السيادي؛ هل من قضايا لبنانيّة بحتة وملحّة لا ترتبط بالعلاقات الإقليمية والدولية؟
عبر مناقشة هذه الأسئلة وغيرها يتناول الكاتب مفهوم «الأمّة اللبنانيّة» في طروحات كبار دعاتها والمبشّرين بها، أمثال شارل مالك وميشال شيحا وجواد بولس وغيرهم، وفي أسسها العميقة في وجدان كمال الصليبي، وفي مفهوم الهوية عند أمين معلوف، مقاطعاً إياه بمفهوم «الأمّة العربية» عند ميشيل عفلق، و«الأمّة السورية» عند أنطون سعادة، و«الأمّة الإسلامية» في الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر.
«الأمّة اللبنانيّة» بحث جديد، ومختلف، في ماهية الهوية اللبنانيّة، وفي الركائز والعلامات الفارقة التي تجعل من الأمّة اللبنانيّة أمّة قائمة بذاتها، سعى بعض أبنائها إلى قتلها، فيما سعى أبناء آخرون إلى إعادة إحيائها.
