وبدافع غامض، ينطلق أمام القس في حكي سيرة حياته وحياة أسرته، بدءًا من "جعفر" جده لأمه في الزمن البعيد، وحتى الآن، ومراوغًا ضيق القس ونفاد صبره.
يحفر البطل - عبر نسيج متشابك من الحكايات - في التاريخ الاجتماعي والسياسي المصري المرتبط بتاريخه وتاريخ أسرته، ليقدم صورة لحياة الجماعة المسيحية، ومعاناتها أمام بيروقراطية المؤسسة والمجتمع المُعادي وتعقيدات السياسة. حكايات تترك أبطالها أكثر حيرة مما كانوا. حيرة لا تترك لهم سوى جملة ختامية، كأنها توقيعهم النهائي على غرابة الحياة وصعوبة فهمها، هي: "ما أعجب طرقك يا رب!".
