كتاب سقراط على خط الاستواء يقدم للقارئ صورة عن جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية التي لا يكاد يعرف عنها شيء سوى اسمها. الكتاب ليس برواية وليس كتاب رحلات، وإنما هو حكاية لتجربة شخصية. سقراط في عنوان الكتاب هو والد الكاتب توماس زمشكال، جوزيف لكوكي، الأستاذ الجامعي الذي سماه طلابه بسقراط. جاء إلى تشيكوسلوفاكيا وهو شاب في نهاية الخمسينيات وغادر في منتصف الستينيات، عندما ولد توماس. والدة توماس تشيكية وربته بمفردها في براغ. لم يعرف توماس والده قط، لكنه بعد وفاة والدته عام 2010 وبالقلليل من البحث، استطاع توماس التواصل مع عائلة والده في الكونغو. سافر إلى الكونغو لمقابلة والده وإخوته وأخواته، وأقاربه. بعد الكثير من التردد، كتب توماس الكتاب بعد عودته من الكونغو. يقول توماس أن هذه ليست قصة لم شمل هوليوودية، لأن والده كان رجلًا معقدًا عاش في أوقات معقدة كذلك، كما أن تاريخ الكونغو ليس هوليووديًا كفاية. كما يقول أن تجربته ليست مميزة بأي حال من الأحوال: "فالكيثرون يمرون بنفس الظروف التي مررتُ بها. هذه قصة عادية. لكن الشيء غير العادي هو أنني لم أجد أي فروقات دينية أو ثقافية أو فلسفية، لهذا أردتُ للقارئ أن يختبر تجربة عادية مثل تلك التي اختبرتها عن كيف تعثر على عائلتك المفقودة".
