قاتلتُ حتى النّهاية، وظلّت النجوم تنظرُ إليّ باللّمعة المرتجفة ذاتها.
الريحُ كانت عطوفًا أحيانًا، لعوبًا أحيانًا، وملعونةً أحيانًا. الشمسُ ظلّت تتسلّطُ عليّ بالقسوة الليّنة ذاتها حتى بات جلدي مثل ورقة، والماءُ يضحكُ عليّ بسخريته المُرّة: محاطٌ بالماءِ من كلّ الجهات، والعطشُ يأكلُني قطعةً قطعةً مُجلِّلًا بصري بغبشٍ كالغيوم الخفيفة.
لم أعُد أقوى على تحريكِ ذراعيَّ وساقيَّ، لكن سترة النجاة تُبقيني طافيًا رغمًا عنّي. لم يعُد فيّ قوّة لأفُكّها فأغرق، أو أقلب نفسي فأغرق. عليّ أن أشهدَ موتي نُقطةً نُقطةً، بالعرض البطيء.
الجثث مُنتفخةٌ، وسترة النجاةِ ملقاةٌ بين أخرياتٍ كثيراتٍ شبيهاتٍ على الشاطئ، تذكارًا من أولئك الذين غرقوا وأولئك الذين نجوا، تومضُ ألوانها الفسفوريّة أنّهم مرّوا من هنا، ولن يتوقّفوا عن المرور أبدًا. ها هم يأتون من البعيد.
