يصادف رودريجو في شوارع ريو دي جانيرو فتاةً عاديةً لا شيء يميزها سوى ملامح شمال شرق البرازيل القاحل، ولسبب مجهول توقظ داخله روح الكاتب. ومن خلال تقصّيه لعالمها يرسم لنا شخصية ماكابيا بطلة الرواي: فتاة فقيرة في التاسعة عشرة تعيش ضائعةً في المدينة التي هاجرت إليها مع خالتها، وحيث تعمل طابعةً على الآلة الكاتبة، وتعيش مثل آلاف الفقيرات على الحدود الدنيا للحياة، دون أن تدرك مقدار بؤسها. وبين خالتها المستبدة، وحبيبها المتطلع الفظّ أوليمبيكو، وجلوريا رفيقتها في العمل، وقصة مثلث العشق الذهبي بينهم، تتطوّر حياة ماكابيا كنوع من الكوميديا السوداء.
هذه الرواية القصيرة هي قصيدة طويلة عن بؤس فتاة وحيدة ومهمشة من مهاجري الأقاليم في مدينة متوحشة لا تراها ولا تهتم بمصيرها. وهي أيضًا تأمل دقيق في وعي الإنسان بشروط حياته وقدرته على تجاوزها من عدمه. وبينما يقصّ علينا الكاتب رودريجو تقلبات حياة ماكابيا، تستعرض لنا الكاتبة كلاريس ليسبكتور على لسانه أفكارها العميقة عن الأدب ومدى قدرته على الإمساك بالحقيقة أو تزييفها .
كلاريس ليسبكتور: من أهم كاتبات البرازيل واللغة البرتغالية. يقال إنها "كافكا الكتابة النسائية". ولدت لعائلة ليتوانية يهودية في منطقة فولينيا غرب أوكرانيا في 10 ديسمبر عام 1920. وهاجرت عائلتها إلى البرازيل وهي بعد رضيعةً حيث نشأت وأظهرت تفوقًا دراسيًا ملحوظًا. بدأ اهتمامها بالأدب والكتابة بعد أن قرأت في مراهقتها رواية "ذئب البوادي" للكاتب الألماني الكبير هيرمان هيسه. وحازت على الاعتراف الأدبي مبكرًا مع صدور روايتها الأولى "قريبًا من القلب البري" في 1943، والتي كتبتها أثناء دراستها للقانون في جامعة ريو دي جانيرو. وقد تنوع إنتاجها الأدبي بين القصة القصيرة والرواية وأدب الأطفال والمقال والمراسلات، حيث خلّفت ما يربو على العشرين كتابًا. وتعد "ساعة النجمة" آخر روايات ليسبكتور، إذ توفيت عقب صدورها بقليل عشية عيد ميلادها السابع والخمسين في التاسع من ديسمبر عام 1977.
