يُعدّ الأرشيف العثماني أهم المراجع التاريخية عن نجد والحجاز إبان العهد العثماني، ومصدراً أساسياً في فهم ودراسة الأوضاع السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية لجميع الأقطار والأقاليم التي كانت واقعة ضمن حدود الدولة العثمانية.
يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة نادرة من الوثائق العربية اليومية المحفوظة ضمن الأرشيف العثماني، تسلط الضوء على حقبة مهمة من تاريخ نجد والحجاز بين عامي 1848 و1913، حيث شهدت بعض ولايات نجد والحجاز مخاض ثورات واضطرابات ضد الدولة العثمانية سبقت توحيدها تحت اسم المملكة العربية السعودية. وقد أنارت هذه الوثائق على حقيقة ما جرى في تلك الحقبة، ورأي حكام الولايات العربية والحكام الأتراك فيها.
وتكتسب هذه الوثائق أهميتها من كونها تشكل المكاتبات والمراسلات الرسمية وغير الرسمية المكتوبة بأيدي شيوخ العشائر والقبائل العربية والمسؤولين الأتراك. وهي، لذلك، تعكس آراء وأفكار المسؤولين العرب والأتراك ذوي اليد الطولى، في ذلك الوقت، في رسم تاريخ نجد والحجاز قبل سقوط الدولة العثمانية، وقبل توحيدهما.
