من مواليد النبطية (جنوب لبنان). تلقى علومه الجامعية في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت وجامعة فرانكفورت وجامعة نيويورك. وحاز على شهادة الدكتوراه في الفلسفة من الجامعة الأخيرة عام 1967. عمل في حقل التدريس الجامعي في عدد من جامعات نيويورك لمدة عشر سنوات، كما عمل أستاذا للفلسفة الغربية في الجامعة الأردنية. منحته جامعة نيويورك "جائزة يوم المؤسسين" وهي جائزة تمنحها الجامعة للمتميزين من خريجيها. له عدة بحوث من مواليد النبطية (جنوب لبنان). تلقى علومه الجامعية في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت وجامعة فرانكفورت وجامعة نيويورك. وحاز على شهادة الدكتوراه في الفلسفة من الجامعة الأخيرة عام 1967. عمل في حقل التدريس الجامعي في عدد من جامعات نيويورك لمدة عشر سنوات، كما عمل أستاذا للفلسفة الغربية في الجامعة الأردنية. منحته جامعة نيويورك "جائزة يوم المؤسسين" وهي جائزة تمنحها الجامعة للمتميزين من خريجيها. له عدة بحوث باللغتين العربية والإنجليزية في موضوعات فلسفية متنوعة، منها: نقد الفلسفة الغربية - الأخلاق والعقل (1990)؛ أولية العقل - نقد أطروحات الإسلام السياسي (2001)؛ اللامعقول في الحركات الإسلامية المعاصرة (2008)؛ الفلسفة والسياسة (1990)؛ الأسس الفلسفية للعلمانية (1998).
شارك في تأسيس مجلة مواقف اللبنانية وكان عضوا في هيئة تحريرها لعدة سنوات. عضو في الجمعية الفلسفية العربية والجمعية الفلسفية الأميركية وجمعية الشؤون الدولية.

إن العلمانية في حالة تراجع كبير في العالم العربي اليوم، والقوى العلمانية يتقلص ويتهمّش دورها وتأثيرها الفاعل في الأحداث باطّرادٍ متزايد، ولا أدلّ على ذلك من الانتعاش الكبير الذي تشهده الحركات الإسلامية المسيِّسة للدين وفي انتشارها الواسع بين شرائح اجتماعية وطبقية متعددة.
ما ساعد على إحداث هذا التراجع يعود إلى أن الفكر العلماني عندنا لم يظهر في سياق أو أعقاب حركة فكرية فلسفية نقدية شاملة أعملت أدواتها النقدية في شتى المجالات، وحاولت أن تصل إلى فهم أعمق للقضايا المختلفة التي ترتبط بهذه المجالات.
إن العلمانية عندنا ظهرت في ظل شروط لم تساعد على ربط فهمنا لها بفهم متطور لطبيعة السياسة والاجتماع وما يتّصل بهما، فكانت علمانيةً ذرائعية تقوم على أسسٍ هشّة، مما جعلها غير قادرة على الصمود أمام الاختبار.
